For some Southern warmth and humor, the Riverton Area Book Club has selected Fannie Flagg's 2006 book Can't Wait to Get to Heaven. In the fictional town of Elmwood Springs, Missouri, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle (who is up in years) falls out of a fig tree and what ensues from this accident makes for a heart-warming and hilarious story about death and the afterlife. Not only do we get reactions from her friends, such as neighbor Raymond who plays God, we also get Elner's commentary on what is happening in her "death-like" state.Fannie Flagg began writing for television at age 19 and is best-known as the author of Fried Green Tomatoes. She has appeared in movies (1978 version of "Grease"), theater productions, and on television ("The Love Boat," and numerous game shows). Alabama gave her the Harper Lee Award in 2012.The book club will meet September 15, from 10-11 am, at the Riverton Village Library. For books and more information please contact the Library at 217-629-6353. We hope you will join us!
