Book Club - October 17

On Saturday, October 17, the Riverton Area Book Club will meet to discuss
Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, from 10-11 am. The group will meet in the Riverton Municipal Building's community room, which has space for social distancing; wearing a mask is required.

Vance's personal memoir of growing up in a Rust Belt town in Appalachia exposes the struggles of the working class poor who are often dealing with abuse, alcoholism, trauma, and abject poverty. (Netflix's 2019 movie version was directed by Ron Howard and was filmed in Middletown, Ohio, the primary setting of the memoir.)

The November 21st book is Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. This is a historical fiction about the pack horse librarians of Kentucky who delivered books to remote mountainous areas from 1935-43. The main character is a British woman, Alice Wright, who marries Kentucky-native Bennett Van Cleve. She wants to do something meaningful in her life but runs into obstacles, such as anti-feminist attitudes, racial injustice, violence, and bad weather.Books and audio can be arranged through interlibrary loan. Please contact the librarians if you need assistance getting print/audio books by calling 217-629-6353 during normal library hours.
