Book Club - September 19

Riverton Book Club Announces Upcoming Selections

On Saturday, September 19, the Riverton Area Book Club will meet to discuss Next Year in Havana, by Chanel Cleeton.  This novel explores the idea of what it means to be Cuban as it tells the family story of Elisa, growing up in high-society Havana in 1958, and Marisol, her granddaughter. Marisol, who lives in Miami, is entrusted with the task of taking her grandmother’s ashes back to Cuba in 2017. As the story alternates between the two characters, romance blooms and family secrets are unveiled with Cuba’s dangerous political climate, but also its beauty, in the backdrop.

The discussion will take place in the community room of the Riverton Village Library from 10 to 11 am. The room is large enough for social distancing and wearing masks is required. Books will be ordered for attendees; if you are new to the group please call the library for help with interlibrary loan or if you have any other questions (217-629-6353).

Mark your calendars!  Books also have been selected for the remainder of 2020: October 17 and November 14. (Please note that the November meeting is early in the month and there is no meeting in December.)
October book: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance (memoirs of growing up in Appalachia)
November book: Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes (historical fiction about the packhorse librarians of Kentucky)
