On February 20 the Riverton Area Book Club will discuss 1984, by George Orwell.  This novel, Orwell's ninth and final book, was published in 1949 and imagined what life might be like in 1984.  Orwell used Stalinist Russia as his model for creating a world in which there is totalitarianism, mass surveillance, manipulation of truth, and repressive regimentation of citizens. 

The story featured Big Brother and the Thought Police and introduced terms such as "prole," "doublethink," "thoughtcrime," and "Newspeak" into popular language.  Throughout the years the novel often has been banned or legally challenged for being subversive. George Orwel, an English author, is also the author of Animal Farm.

The book club meets the 3rd Saturday of every month (except December) from 10-11am in the community room of the Riverton Municipal Building. There is ample space for social distancing; masks must be worn. Everyone is welcome to attend.
